In addition, you should draw a symbol to represent the theme, but it CANNOT be something that is mentioned in the poem directly or indirectly – so a gun would not be allowed because it is indirectly mentioned in the poem.

5. Before looking at the poem, look at the title of the poem on the board. Discuss with a partner what you think the title means. Ensure you all understand what the apostrophe does so you do not think the deer are plotting to overthrow humans!

3. Work in trios. One student reads each stanza out loud. Pause to think and each person underlines something in the stanza. Discuss selections. Move to stanza 2, another person in the trio reads, pause, underline, discuss. Repeat for stanza 3.
4. Using the Close Reading of a Poem sheet that you all have, write all over your poem to neatly point out details about the title, word choices/order, tone, figurative language, sound devices, etc. You know the drill by now.

Packing for the Future by Lorna Crozier - pick an object to carry things into the future (backpack, garbage bag, Rubber Maid tote, Louis Vuitton satchel, Samsonite suitcase, cardboard box), draw your carry-all and start filling it up with what you need for your future: objects, emotions, abstract concepts (ie. education).
