Friday
Because I am away, I will discuss with you how to submit your Poem Infographic on Monday. This gives you a bit more time to DO A REALLY GOOD JOB!
Today you will sign-up for a particular speech that you are going to analyse. Here are the steps to follow. Be prepared to share in class on Monday - you will be given a grade /12 for this work.

1. Analyse your speech as an argument. How effective is it? What was the speaker up against? What is the occasion for the speech? What did the author have to keep in mind when composing the text? What were their goals? What was their purpose for the speech?
2. Take a close look at the features or rhetorical devices/techniques ( a fancy word - think back to poetry and things like word choices, metaphor, imagery, repetition, irony, allusion, personification, etc.). Identify as many of these devices as you can - push your thinking! What makes the speech remarkable? How did the author's use of rhetoric (those devices) evoke a response in the audience? Why is this speech still remembered today?
3. What is the structure of the speech? What does the author talk about first? Is it structured like an essay? What is the thesis? Perhaps go paragraph by paragraph here and note what topic is discussed in each one.
4. Carefully consider the author's deliberate manipulation of language. Look at the poster above the printer. Which of these techniques have been used?
5. Focus on the social, cultural, geographical and historical origins of the speech. Give a bit of info about each. Do a bit of research for this part.
6. Print a copy of your speech. Make notes all over it for Monday's share-out.

Thursday
We began looking at speeches and speech writing. We began with the Rhetorical Triangle: "speaker," message, audience. We then looked at Queen Elizabeth 1st speech to her army at Tilbury as a way to examine some powerful speech tools/ways to manipulate an audience.

Wednesday
Response quiz on poetry. Work on Poem Infographic.

Tuesday
We were back in the library again today.

Monday
Library time to work on the Poem Infographic assignment.
Show me your printed poem today if you have not already done so. Work on annotating it for the Infographic assignment.
