Thursday

1. Final response to your term 2 novel:
 - How and why did (or didn't) the novel meet your expectations?
 - Research other titles by the same author. Pick one. How is it similar or dissimilar to the book you just read.
- What is one question you would like the author to answer about their book and why?

Wednesday

the possible solutions for the letters above can be found in the blog post from Monday.

1. Reading time for your novel. DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR BOOK TO CLASS TOMORROW. You will write your 4th and final reading response in class tomorrow.
2. Blend some quotes! Complete the yellow quote blending sheet up to and including question #7. HAND IT IN AT THE END OF THE CLASS.
3. Complete annotation of 3 poems if you haven't already done so. HAND THEM IN. Could you please submit them in the following order: Song for the Homeless (blue) on top, then Blue jay, then Deer's Take on Man. Put your name, not your student number at the top of Song for the Homeless.
5. Complete reading Cousins. Complete the T-chart where you are noting Joe's emotions during the various parts/scenes of the story.
6. After reading Cousins, reflect back on the 5 things you have recently read: Song for the Homeless, Blue Jay, Deer's Take on Man, Rock Bottom, Cousins. On your own lined paper, identify an example of imagery from one of the texts that you connected with and another example from a different text that confused you. Discuss in using blended quotes, what about it was about the imagery that allowed you to relate, and what made the other imagery and what questions do you have about the confusing one. This response should be a paragraph of around 150 words. HAND IN at end of class.

Tuesday

1. Reading time. Final response to your novel will be written in class on Thursday.
2. Finish up Deer's Take on Man - what two things are being juxtaposed in the poem? Complete annotation of the poem using the green "Close Reading" guide.
3. Kahoot - poetry terms - Block B/F we will do this tomorrow.
4. Before reading the story "Cousins" do the following: Copy out the 5 questions below and answer them T or F. During reading, create a t-chart (like the one you see below) track Joe's emotions from scene to scene. Put scenes on one side of the t-chart and Joe's emotions on the other side of the t-chart. Some examples of scenes are:  at home with his parents; playing on the Slip nSlide with his cousin; in the car with his great-aunts, and so on.
Questions to copy out:
1. Every family is dysfunctional in some way or another.
    T      F
2. Being a family simply means being related by blood/marriage nothing more   T   F
3. I treat my family members differently than I treat other people in my life.  T  F
4. Family meant more to people in the past than it does now.     T    F

5. Family means ___________________________ .

          Scenes                             l                      Joe's emotions

                                                   l

Monday

1. Reading time.
2. A bit of quote blending practice.
Fractal partners?
3. Read the introduction to Rock Bottom. Run through the work you did on Rock Bottom last week: definitions/belief statements for empathy; ruptures in the story. Discuss the storyteller's techniques such as flashback and reversed chronological order. Why might the author have chosen these techniques? Effect?
4. Post- it: What is an epiphany? What is the young man's epiphany, and why would the author write a story about this particular revelation?
5. Post-it After reading Rock Bottom, return to your group. Discuss what the author's big idea is about life, society or human behaviour. Write it on a last Post-it. On the theme Post-it, you must also come up with a symbol for the theme of the story; however, it cannot be an object that is in the story.
6. Add some details to the green Close Reading of a Poem sheet. Annotate Blue Jay and Song for the Homeless.
7. A new poem... it is called Deer's Take on Man - predict what it will be about! During reading, what two things are being juxtaposed in the poem? After reading, identify the poetic devices you and your partner can find.

8. KAHOOT! Poetry terms.
