Friday
We marked the quiz that was written yesterday about the short story. For most of the class, we did a graffiti of quotes from the story "Cousins".
Thursday
Silent reading was extended today to allow as many as possible to complete reading "Cousins" before the quiz on the story. Once the quiz was done we did a little exercise on hyperbole using one of the world's most popular television programs! At the end of the class, I asked for a 3,2,1 about "Cousins": 3 topics the story deals with; 2 theme statements; 1 thesis you could use in an essay about the story.
Wednesday
We had another dramatic game of Chiffre/Chance in order to review short story terms. Congratulations to The Chiffres on their calculated win. For the remainder of the class, time was provided to read the short story Cousins. Tomorrow after 15 minutes of reading time,  there will be a ten question quiz just to check that you have read the story.
Tuesday
We began today's class by reviewing how to complete the essay practice.  We reviewed what makes a strong thesis statement, so that the thesis on the introduction could be finished. I collected the essay sheet at the end of the class. I asked everyone a series of questions about family just to get your brains ready for the next short story which is rather long. During reading you are to track Joe's emotional journey (roller coaster) and also track the author's use of figurative language: particularly metaphors and similes.
Monday
I returned the graded good copies of the theme paragraphs about Rock Bottom or The Larder. This work should be kept in your classroom folder. I gave out Post-its and asked for feedback on the example, criteria, feedback process and asked that everyone set a writing goal for the next assignment. Students who have any part of the paragraph writing process still not done, can hand-in their completed work with the next assignment provided that the next assignment is submitted on time. No late marks will be deducted, but the opportunity for 5 marks for the draft has passed.
We reviewed essay structure next and I handed out Essay practice #1 which involves writing and introduction based on the body of the essay. This practice work is due tomorrow.
