Friday

Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt! We followed that up with a game to practice the terms and devices for the course. And, we snuck in a quick couple of rounds of Pictionary at the end of the class. Have a wonderful Spring Break!
Thursday

At the beginning of class I handed back the essays and a progress report. We finally listened to the end of the podcast about tree planting. Afterwards, I asked everyone to finish reading the excerpt from the Dirt Eaters and continue marking up the text. Well done on the essays btw. I noticed significant improvement from the practices we did to the good copies.

Wednesday

The essay good copies were due today. Once they were handed in we did a quick tour of the Grade 8's French projects in the 100 wing. When we returned to class we did Edit Quiz #2 and marked it today. Afterwards there was only a few minutes left so we reviewed the where we have gotten so far with the non-fiction text examples, reviewed why we are doing this and where we are going.

Tuesday

Following silent reading, we did a brief edit sheet with some of the common errors that I found in the essays. There will be a quiz on these errors tomorrow. Next we returned to the Dirt Eaters reading, our second non-fiction piece, that we are reading as an example of writing style. As you read, I ask that you note in the margins: point of view, word choices (word "colour" & mood), sentence structure, figurative language, tone, pace, paragraph structure, allusions.

Monday

We finished up the Bottomfeeder text by going over some of the persuasive techniques used by the author. Next, in preparation for the next non-fiction text, I showed a video clip about tree planting. I read online that an average tree planter's bag can weigh up to 23kg (50lbs.) so we loaded up a bag with weights from the weight room to see what that might feel like. The two people that tried it agreed that it would be pretty tough scrambling around on steep hillsides, up and over logs and other slippery obstacles with such a heavy bag. Tomorrow we will finish the Vinyl Cafe radio segment about tree planting and move on to reading an excerpt from the book "The Dirt Eaters"
